More fighting in Lebanon
Fierce fighting between gunmen supporting the western-backed government and militants allied to the Hezbollah-led opposition has moved from Beirut to the hills east of the capital. The army stepped in to contain the violence after the deployment of troops in the northern city of Tripoli, where more fighting took place. But despite the spread of the violence, fears of an all-out civil war appear to have been averted. Calm returned to the streets of Beirut after four days of clashes which claimed at least 38 lives.
