Victorian Fires

The biggest Victorian bushfire in 20 years has burnt out around 200,000 hectares of the Wyperfield National Park and surrounding farmland in the north-west of Victoria.

Started a week ago by lightning strikes, the blaze has burnt out about half the park, incinerating native animals and birds including emus, grey kangaroos, parrots, cockatoos and galahs - along with vegetation untouched by fire since the 1950s.

Mike Leonard, spokesperson for fire management with the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment, joins us on Summer Breakfast.
