Arts policy

21/11/2007
Back in the past, in the Keating years, there was always a great song and dance when arts policies were unveiled. In an election campaign that's focused so heavily on the economy, however, the arts are left somewhat in the dark. Labor is promising $34 million in new initiatives, but the Coalition is yet to hold an arts policy launch.

Gillian Armstrong's documentary on Florence Broadhurst

15/11/2007
She was one of the most flamboyant characters of 20th century Australia. With her shocking red hair and incredible chutzpah, Australian design pioneer and wallpaper entrepreneur Florence Broadhurst shook up conservative Australia in more ways than one. For decades her work was forgotten, but it's come back in vogue in the last few years; her colourful wallpaper designs are gracing the walls of some of the hip joints in town. Florence Broadhurst didn't live to see the second coming of her work. She was murdered in 1977 and it's a case that has never been solved. An award-winning documentary about her life and spirit screens on SBS this Sunday.

TV reviews with Sue Turnbull: Summer Heights High

11/09/2007
It's the most watched ABC TV comedy series in 15 years. If you missed it, the show is called Summer Heights High and episode two is on tomorrow night. It's about the lives of students and teachers at a public school and Ja'mie King, fresh from a private school, is struggling to fit in. Summer Heights High is the latest show from Chris Lilley, who brought you the very successful comedy, We Can Be Heroes in 2005. Our TV reviewer Sue Turnbull joined us from Melbourne. Picks of the week Wednesday, 8.30pm, Channel 10 -- The International Comedy Festival. Can Channel 10 win any ratings from the ABC's comedy line up with the International Comedy Festival from Montreal? Wednesday, 9.00pm, ABC -- The Chaser. We have to see how The Chaser reports their motorcade incident. Monday, 8.30pm, Channel 7 -- City Homicide is rating well and quietly building into a fine series.

Our TV critic Sue Turnbull has taken a look at the first few episodes. Picks of the Week Tuesday, 10.45, Channel Nine -- The Sopranos are back on. Wednesday, 8.30pm, ABC -- Spicks and Specks is focusing on music from the movies. Friday, 7.30pm, Channel Ten -- Jamie at Home is back with lush visuals of gardens and food, the equivalent of a non-demanding browse through Country Life.

Australian Youth Orchestra

30/07/2007
The Australian Youth Orchestra is celebrating 50 years of music this year and this month they have embarked on a celebratory tour of Europe. They've already performed in Paris and they are currently in Germany. To tell us how the orchestra is being received and what tours like this mean for our young musicians, Breakfast was joined by AYO's artistic director Bronwyn Lobb from Dahmen, Germany.
