Australia prepares to put its case on Afghanistan to NATO

Next week the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, and Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon will travel to the NATO meeting in Bucharest to push Australia's call for a more coherent strategy in Afghanistan. The push coincides with an increasingly difficult time for defence. Mr Fitzgibbon has called for the department to find ten billion dollars in savings over the next decade, while pushing the services to improve retention and step up recruitment of skilled workers, including women.

Iraqi family seeks compensation

Three years ago, the Al-Saadis family were driving to their home in Baghdad, just a few streets away from the Australian Embassy. As they approached, an Australian soldier sprayed their car with bullets, injuring but not killing the mother and her eight-year-old son. At the time, the Australian Army said the car was driven suspiciously and failed to respond to repeated requests to stop. The family denies this and this week they lodged a landmark civil action for compensation in the Brisbane Supreme Court.
