Kyeema air disaster

Seventy years ago this weekend, a DC 2 crashed into Victoria's Dandenongs. All 18 on board died instantly, and the fatal crash became known as the Kyeema disaster. In 1938 airline travel was only just gaining public acceptance and this accident was Australia's worst air disaster at the time, and one of the worst in the world.

Qantas mid-air incident and injuries

Eleven people were seriously injured in yesterday's mid-flight incident on a Qantas jet over WA, and were airlifted to Perth overnight. Their plane, travelling from Singapore to Perth with 303 passengers and 10 crew on board, suddenly lost altitude and was forced to make an emergency landing in Exmouth.

Steve Fossett's plane found

Police in the United States have confirmed that the wreckage of a light plane found in a remote area of eastern California is that of millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett, who disappeared just over a year ago. The search for the plane resumed after a hiker found items belonging to Steve Fossett yesterday including ID cards, a faded sweatshirt and a thousand dollars in cash.

Madrid crash

At least 145 people are feared dead after a passenger plane swerved off the runway at Madrid's Barajas Airport in Spain. The Spanair flight carrying 166 passengers and 9 crew en route for the Canary Islands was about to take off when the tragedy occurred, mid-afternoon Spanish time. It is believed one of the plane's engines caught fire before the plane crashed and burst into flames. There are unconfirmed reports of 28 survivors, eight of them in critical condition, who were flung from the plane by the force of the impact and landed in a stream, saving them from more severe burns.

Qantas scare

Qantas has been ordered to inspect every oxygen bottle aboard its 747 fleet, after a mid-air explosion on a Hong Kong to Melbourne flight forced an emergency landing in Manila. It's the stuff of every airline traveller's nightmares. But the pilots who fly the big jets say they are well prepared for such emergencies.

Plane crash in Sudan

A plane crash in Sudan's capital Khartoum is believed to have claimed dozens of lives. An Airbus carrying more than 200 passengers had one of its engines explode after landing in bad weather.
