Australia prepares to put its case on Afghanistan to NATO

Next week the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, and Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon will travel to the NATO meeting in Bucharest to push Australia's call for a more coherent strategy in Afghanistan. The push coincides with an increasingly difficult time for defence. Mr Fitzgibbon has called for the department to find ten billion dollars in savings over the next decade, while pushing the services to improve retention and step up recruitment of skilled workers, including women.

Brendan Nelson outlines his plan for Liberal policy

Today at the National Press Club in Canberra federal opposition leader Brendan Nelson will launch a bid to put his stamp on the Liberal leadership, with a five point plan spelling out new policy directions. Dr Nelson has a hard job on his hands to rebuild the Coalition's political credibility after last year's election loss. His task has been made more difficult by a string of bad poll results and constant speculation about leaderhip rival Malcolm Turnbull.
