Pensioner Margo Wall
24/09/2008
Margo Wall is a Tasmanian pensioner and advocate for a better deal, in fact, she says she is "the voice of the pensioner from the island state..."
Margo managed to get a moment with the Prime Minister several weeks ago and tell him her thoughts, which prompted a phone call from the Treasurer Wayne Swan.
She has started an advocacy group 'Voice of the Pensioner'. If you have any thoughts or would like to receive a newsletter please write to PO Box 180, Claremont 7011, Tasmania with a stamped self addressed envelope.
Aged care under pressure
12/06/2008
Seniors groups and nursing homes say the aged care industry is under immense strain, and the federal government must do more to improve funding. Their call comes as a new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows aged care residents are becoming more dependent and are staying longer, a result of the growing number of dementia sufferers and frail patients.
Hazel Hawke's carer daughter
03/03/2008
Anyone who has cared for someone suffering from Alzheimer's will realise just what a demanding, relentless and often demoralising job it can be. The new federal government has appointed a carer, albeit a high profile one, to co-chair a new high-level 16-member national advisory group on dementia.
Sue Pieters-Hawke is the daughter of Hazel Hawke, Alzheimer's sufferer and the ex-wife of former prime minister Bob Hawke. She's been caring for her mother since Hazel was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease seven years ago. She lives next-door to her mother on Sydney's North Shore. Sue is the principal of SPH Resources, a business committed to supporting personal happiness and enhancing community and organisational life. She joined us from Kingscliff on the NSW far north coast, where the first meeting of the advisory group is about to take place.
