Spivs, no-necks, front-men, and serious poke, with UK crime writer Martina Cole
|
This morning we enter a world of spivs, no-necks, front-men, 'faces', hard women and 'serious poke'.
If that's unintelligible, you haven't yet picked up the rhythm of London's pavement talk; you're not dodging Lily Law and you haven't read one of Martina Cole's novels lately.
Cole is a British crime writer with thirteen novels under her belt, and a story of origins to rival that of Harry Potter's creator, JK Rowling. They both started out as single mothers, writing to escape reality; they're both blond; they're both astute businesswomen; they're both bestsellers.
But Martina Cole's fictional world is not full of fantasy. Rather, it's full of extraordinary violence, crime and grimness. It's also funny, pacey, with memorable characters and heroes who are, well, villains.
Cole's novels include The Know, The Take and The Graft, while her latest is called Close. Radio National's Kate Evans spoke with Cole in Brisbane a few weeks ago.
