Dava Sobel: writing the history of science

Today we meet Dava Sobel, author of three bestselling books on the history of science: Longitude, Galileo's Daughter, and The Planets.

She also co-authored five other books, is a former award-winning science reporter for The New York Times, and has contributed articles to prominenent magazines such as The New Yorker, Audubon, Life and Discover. Sobel was recently part of the seven-member committee of the International Astronomical Union charged with defining the word 'planet'.

Dava Sobel is speaking to Des Cowley, the rare books librarian at the State Library of Victoria. They are on stage at the Melbourne Writers' Festival and are talking about Sobel's move from science journalism to writing books about science history.
