In 1942, the Ukrananian writer Irene Nemirovsky died in Auschwitz. She left behind small daughters and a suitcase which they were not to open for more than 40 years. Within it lay the two completed novels of the five she intended to write in her Suite Francaise, a fictional account of France under German occupation.
