American novelist, poet and short story writer, best known for his novels, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets and The Red Badge of Courage. He travelled to Cuba in 1897 as a war correspondent to report on the insurrection there, and ended in near disaster; the ship that he was travelling, Commodore, sank. The result was one of the world's great short stories, The Open Boat.
