Ride on Stranger
|
Ride on Stranger is a study of a city between wars, a city with its shams and fanatics and charlatans. Yet Shannon Hicks find the mistaken bravery and wistfulness at the heart of things, through the clamour of the organisations, movements and the revolutionary bodies. She looks for reality but does not find it until her own life is an apparent failure.
Her progress is a series of escapes from success, each success exposing a different kind of dishonesty at the basis of society. There is something awry in these encounters with what life has to offer in the way of human values. In essentials, Sydney might be any city of the western world, but it has a distinctive piquancy and freedom.
