Nine year old Adrian worries about quicksand, sea monsters and shopping centres. When three neighbourhood children set out one day to buy an ice cream and are never seen again, Adrian's feelings of isolation and loneliness are intensified by his fear of the "thin man", a possible suspect. Then a new family of three children move into a house across the street, and the possibility of new friendships offers Adrian an opportunity to expand his cheerless world.
