Jack Maggs
by Peter Carey
Read by Bill Kerr
This is the real story behind Charles Dickens' classic novel Great Expectations - or so Peter Carey, his tongue firmly planted in his cheek, would have us believe. It is a story rich in characters, and the sounds and smells of nineteenth-century London. It gives us a self-confident young journalist on the make (Dickens himself, perhaps), a seedy grocer trying to better himself, a gallery of underworld characters, a pretty young thing, and a love story. And of course Jack Maggs himself - the convict who has secretly returned from Australia to find the little boy who, twenty years earlier, had been kind to him.
Veteran actor Bill Kerr gives a wonderfully rich reading of this acclaimed novel.
Adapted by Rodney Wetherell
Music composed and played by Lucky Oceans.
Produced and directed by Gillian Berry
