Feb 2 - March 6 Night Letters
25 episodes by Robert Dessaix
What would you do if you received news that you are dying?
Robert is shocked by the news, which comes out of the blue. He takes a journey through Switzerland and northern Italy to Venice, and writes 20 letters home, charting his journey, the places he visits, the people he meets and the stories he hears. The letters also chart his state of mind as he moves from panic and despair to a state of grace in which he finds ways to live with the knowledge of his own mortality.
Night Letters is read by the author, Robert Dessaix. Listeners to Radio National will be familiar with Robert as the former presenter of Books and Writing. Night Letters is his first novel.
Night Letters won various awards in 1997, including the A.S.E.L. Gold Medal. It was short-listed for the 1997 Miles Franklin award, and both the N.S.W. and Victorian Premier's Literary Awards. It was judged Australian booksellers' favourite book of the year.
