In Conversation - Professor Sandra Harding

23/11/2008
To complement the Boyer Lectures we present some in depth interviews by robyn Williams from his program In Conversation. this week Robyn speaks with Professor Sandra Harding, the relatively new vice-chancellor at James Cook University in Townsville. Professor Harding reminds us that over one third of Australia is tropical and yet only one major university in this country, apart from Charles Darwin in the NT, is properly equipped to handle the range of topics so important to the north of our region. And, unlike some, they also have a successful campus in Singapore. For a transcript and further details visit the In Conversation website

Climate change update - Tim Flannery

31/08/2008
The response to climate change has focused largely on what we can do to reduce the production of emissions. But leading environmentalist Dr Tim Flannery reminds us that we should not lose sight of the tree fix. Farms and forests could become 'enormous engines of planetary cleansing'. Join us for an update on the science of climate change and some solutions based on the force of nature.

Ross Garnaut: Measuring the Immeasurable

29/06/2008
Climate change is a battleground of risk. It appears we need to make fateful decisions in a context of exceptional uncertainly. Enter Ross Garnaut. He has been commissioned by Australia's Commonwealth, state and territory governments to make sense of the risks, costs and benefits of tackling runaway carbon emissions. His interim report is due this week. Today we hear from the man himself, delivering the sixth HW Arndt Memorial Lecture at the Australian National University. Can the immeasurable be measured? You can find a transcript of the lecture at The HW Arndt Memorial Lecture see below:

Forget renewable energy. Clean coal and 'nice' nuclear will be the way to go if we are to slash greenhouse gas emissions. It's all about base load and consumer expectations. This week, in the second of two public forums on technology and climate change, supporters of coal and uranium make their case. This is an edited broadcast of a public forum held on 28 April 2008 as part of the free Melbourne Conversations program. It was organised by the City of Melbourne, in collaboration with the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and kindly supported by Future Leaders.

Lessons from financial history - Professor Niall Ferguson

11/05/2008
Join us for a fresh look at the way finance works. Professor Niall Ferguson's analysis draws on the work of the French Naturalist Jean Bapiste de Lamarck - the idea that organisms alter and adapt in response to a changing environment. He applies this framework to our current, uneasy financial climate and asks: are we on the brink of a great dying?
