Nomads: the Aboriginal descendants of the Afghan camel drivers

28/04/2007
We journey to the geographical heart of the continent in search of the Aboriginal descendants of the Afghan camel drivers. In this program, we meet a pillar of the Afghan-Aboriginal community in Alice Springs, a hostel worker twice descended from the camel drivers and a well-known artist from the Riverland. You'll also hear from Auntie Mona Wilson whose parents, Jack and Lallie Akbar, were banished from Western Australia in the 1920s. Their crime? Falling in love.

Many rivers

24/03/2007
In Aboriginal culture, the health of a community is often equated with the health of its rivers and watercourses. In this program we hear artists, writers and performers talk about the meaning they derive from rivers, lakes and waterholes. Also we feature the vocal harmonies of Freshwater, who celebrate river culture through their music.

Wisdom of the Elders: Assiniboine and Gros Ventre

17/03/2007
This program explores the oral history and culture of the Assiniboine and the Gros Ventre tribes of Montana. The Assiniboine call themselves 'Nakona' or 'Nakonabi', meaning "the friendly people" while the Gros Ventre were so named by the French, because when the colonists fed them their bellies swelled up. Arlie Neskahi introduces us to two more of the Native American nations who lived and still live along the route followed by the Corps of Discovery, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Another documentary in the series Native Nations Along the Lewis and Clark Trail, produced by Wisdom of the Elders Radio.
