Uranium mining

Uranium has become THE issue in the Western Australian election. Premier Alan Carpenter plans to introduce legislation to ban all mining of the mineral if re-elected, triggering the criticism of the Liberals and putting him at odds with his South Australian counterpart. South Australia is set to expand uranium production at the Beverley mine - with the support of the Minister for environment Peter Garrett.

Should Australia embrace uranium as an economic opportunity? Why does this issue continue to divide the Australian community?
