Earlier this week a Sydney man was fined $1000 for posting an illegal copy of The Simpsons Movie on the internet. According to the industry, copyright theft is sucking a quarter of a billion dollars a year from the local economy, but are tougher penalties the way to change consumers' behaviour?

Australian songs and songwriting

Music royalty fees

A recent ruling by the Copyright Tribunal will see a substantial increase in the royalties paid to musicians as of August 1. Nightclubs and DJs say they can't afford the increase and that punters will bear the costs. But musicians say it's about time they were paid properly for their work.
