Coffee culture
19/12/2007
The boom in the coffee market in Australia is extraordinary; although coffee was on the First Fleet (albeit terrible quality) it wasn't until Italian migrants introduced espresso to Melbourne that coffee culture took off. We'll discuss the history of coffee in Australia, talk to a World Barista Championship judge and look at the pros and cons of 'fair-trade'.

David Crystal and the geography of English accents
27/09/2007
We often traverse the highways and laneways of language on Australia Talks, and this program features a real treasure -- with Professor David Crystal, whose latest book, By Hook or by Crook; A Journey in search of English, is a travelogue of English accents in Wales.
David literally travels throughout Wales searching out the way English is spoken today, and where many of our words and meanings have come from. We'll also be tracking which words and accents have made the voyage to Australia...
One of David's anecdotes in By Hook or by Crook tells us that his grandparents were beaten by their teachers -- in Edwardian times -- for speaking Welsh ... but today, the British taxpayer funds expensive Welsh language revival programs.
Which makes us wonder if there might one day be 'ocker' revival programs...

Shipwrecks
14/09/2007
We're diving into the world of shipwrecks. Australia helped develop some of the world's best practice in the handling of these important underwater cultural sites but has stalled at the barrier on signing a UNESCO convention that would help provide better protection for wrecks around the world.
Why do shipwrecks continue to fascinate and what's the best way to tell the stories that they hold?
The Haneef case and the AFP

A discussion re the aftermath of the Haneef case. Has public confidence in the Federal Police been shaken? What questions does the matter raise about Australia's anti-terrorism laws, the discretionary powers of the Immigration Minister, and the independence of the judiciary?
