Prosper or Languish? Rural & Regional Australia

23/05/2006
What makes regional centres prosper, or languish? Location, location, location? Or is there more to it? From diversity to transport infrastructure; some serious limits to leadership; and a healthy smattering of diversity, the results may surprise you. So from Hyden to Meekatharra; Mt Isa to that little town you drove through in a hurry but can't remember its name, we're looking at the state of the regions, and the role of both innovation and the people willing to put their hands up and step in to do a job. Psychologist Ian Plowman has examined a whole range of town in rural Qld to see what makes some work, and some fail (and talks about populations, diversity, creativity and leadership); Peter Brain, from National Economics, oversees the annual State of the Region Reports (and discusses infrastructure, transport, industry and policy); while Jane Mouritz from WA joins us from the small town of Hyden and inside a range of local organisations, to talk about volunteering, inspiration, and the texture of her town. And of course ATB listeners are an important part of the program - discussing their own towns, what's happening, what's changing, their role and involvement; whether the palce is dynamic or wilting, resistant to change or ready to reinvent itself.
