Moving on
01/10/2007
Today we're talking about the challenges of 'moving on' -- how does the departure of a corporate president or a political figure affect the culture of their organisation?
What challenges does 'moving on' present for the individuals who often have to reshape their professional identity?
Climate change refugees
07/06/2007
A report from the inter-governmental panel on climate change estimates there could be up to 200 million climate change refugees by 2050. In the South Pacific, Tuvalu, Kiribati and the Carteret Islands are developing plans to move their population off the low-lying islands if necessary. Some evidence on changing sea levels suggests that in time the islands will be uninhabitable. So what plans are in place in case of a new wave of Pacific migration? And what will become of these island communities?
Greenwashing
05/04/2007
The response to global warming - sometimes called climate change - has been rapid and in many cases pioneering. In the UK, a Climate Changes Bill sets emission targets for example. Carbon trading is making a lot of brokers a lot of money, and individuals can offset their own carbon 'footprint' by buying green energy, or paying a tax on airfares.
Industry and business have also started making huge changes to the way they use energy and recycle waste. But how much of these 'corporate' responses to global warming are actually making a difference?
Are companies truly making a sacrifice or are they guilty of 'greenwashing'?
China and Taiwan courting the Pacific
08/02/2007
Our nearest neighbours in the South Pacific usually appear on our news bulletins when there's a riot or an attempted coup... but now, the level of bribery and corruption in Pacific politics is dominating the battle between China and Taiwan for recognition by the United Nations.
But there's a complex history of migration that influences the competition between the two Chinas in the South Pacific.
So what is Australia's role in the South Pacific, and has chequebook diplomacy gone too far in the region?
HIV/AIDS - Illusions and Truths Read Transcript
07/02/2007
Back in 1981 when AIDS - Acquired Immune Deficiency - was first declared a deadly communicable disease, Australia dealt with the problem head-on - through a public scare campaign, and an efficient needle exchange program - but in 2007 the numbers of people contracting HIV-AIDS are once again increasing.
So, how do we talk about high-risk behaviour and the culture around a disease that's ravaging new populations here and in the South Pacific?
