While they might be the bane of anyone hoping for an uninterrupted night at the movies or a restaurant, in the developing world they are transforming banking and the agriculture and fishing industries. They've also become a crucial part of disaster relief, with cell networks deployed faster than terrestrial services in the wake of events like the Boxing Day tsunami. How are these mobile devices shaping our lives?

Green energy

From today businesses emitting large amounts of greenhouse gas are required to measure their emission - a first move in preparation for Australia's emission trading scheme. Going green comes at a cost not only for businesses but also for households. If you want to live completely on green energy it costs you additional 400 dollar a year. And if you can buy 100% green energy - why bother with those solar panels on the roof?

Child protection

The Australian Childhood Foundation wants authorities to rethink the way they deal with child neglect. The death of 18-month-old twins in Queensland followed by the discovery of two other alleged neglect cases have prompted the usual criticism of child protection agencies. But according to the Childhood Foundation it's not about more welfare and family support, it's about recognising early that neglect is a crime. At the same time there are new calls for a national approach to child protection. This follows the deaths of three young children and their father in regional New South Wales. Their bodies were found in a parked car in a comunity west of Eden. The Federal Government is promising a national strategy for child protection that it says will co-ordinate state services and resources. So how is the welfare community responding?

Euthanasia

At the moment there are two pieces of legislation before Australian parliaments which would provide a legal framework for euthanasia under very specific circumstances: one in the Victorian parliament and one in the Federal Senate. Apparently around 85 per cent of Victorians favour the right to choose assistance with dying. Is legislation long overdue or the beginning of a slippery moral slope?
