Artworks Feature: Fred Morgan

This Artworks feature is all about the recorder and, most especially, it's about one man, Fred Morgan, who for a time made the world's most beautiful recorders.

The recorder was introduced into Australian schools in the 1940s and at that time, that's just about the only place you'd see or hear one. For nearly two hundred years the recorder had completely disappeared from use. Its reincarnation began in the 1920s, but it was really not till the 1960s that it came into its own again, with the Baroque revival and a Dutch musician called Frans Bruggen who played a recorder made in Australia by Fred Morgan. And together they redefined the recorder as a virtuoso concert instrument.
