The Biennale of Sydney
|
American artist Michael Rakowitz is here for The Biennale of Sydney currently underway. Michael's been described as an artist who creates 'social sculpture, that addresses social problems'. He's also fascinated by visionary architecture -- imaginative, idealistic designs, that have never actually been built.
For the Biennale, he's created White Man Got No Dreaming at the Art Gallery of New South Walesn which combines a revolutionary Russian design for a building from 1919, with a contemporary Australian building project, the Pemulwuy Aboriginal redevelopment plan for Redfern. It's a sculpture made from old building materials from houses in The Block in Redfern, used to create a Tatlin Tower -- designed in 1919 by the avant-garde Russian artist Vladimir Tatlin, but never built.
There's a good article on Michael Rakowitz in the current issue of Art In Australia, in their special Biennale edition. And the Sydney Biennale itself runs until the first week of September.
