Artworks Feature: Paris Immigration Museum
|
The Paris Immigration Museum has opened its doors amid fierce controversy. The Museum was a pet project of the former president Jacques Chirac - but when it opened in October last year, the new president Nicolas Sarkozy didn't bother to attend. Then a group of historians who'd been involved in establishing the museum resigned from the project - as a protest over a new Ministry that President Sarkozy has created - combining Immigration with Integration and National Identity. The historians say that this terminology fixes immigration as a 'problem' in France. Rhiannon Brown speaks to historian Nancy Green, curator Isabelle Renard and Pascal Payeur, who designed the permanent exhibition there.
