The Australian War Memorial
|
Paradoxically the most popular and most sombre of our museums is the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Begun as a monument and museum honouring Australians who died in the First World War, it was then extended to include the Second World War. New galleries, opened earlier this year, cover Australia's involvement in conflicts since 1945, including the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as our peace-keeping missions -- in East Timor for example. Amanda Smith speaks to Lola Wilkins, head of art at the Australian War Memorial.
