Meryl Tankard

Over the past 25 years, Meryl Tankard has forged a diverse and interesting career for herself as a choreographer; here in Australia and in Europe, with companies like the Netherlands Dans Theatre and the Lyon Opera Ballet. She's also done big-scale stuff, like the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games for example. She did the 'Deep Sea Dreaming' part of that; and the choreography for a production of Tarzan on Broadway.

Meryl Tankard was born in Darwin, and she began her professional career as a dancer with the Australian Ballet. The turning point in her life as a dancer and choreographer came in 1978, when she joined the German dance company run by Pina Bausch.

Meryl Tankard's latest choreography is for the Sydney Dance Company. It's called Inuk 2. It has already been seen in Sydney and Canberra, and will be on in Melbourne later this month. It's been described as a 'tribal dance for the 21st century'.
