Children of Heaven is the second series made as a
co-production by Radio National and BBC World. Last
year, At the Edge of Asia surveyed modern life and culture
in South Korea and Japan and was broadcast in the weeks
just before the FIFA World Cup.
The writer and presenter of Children of Heaven is Tony
Barrell who began his ABC career with 2JJ (as it was
in the late Seventies) and has produced many programs
for Radio National and ABC TV. He also presented last
year's Edge of Asia series.
Tony's BBC World Service colleague is Sue Waldram who
produces for the daily human interest show Outlook.
For this series they travelled from Okinawa in Japan
to Hanoi in Vietnam, Seoul in South Korea and to Singapore
An article by Tony about the Okinawa program ( with
photos he took on location) is featured in the September
issue of the ABC's Arts Magazine, Limelight. He and
Rick Tanaka wrote a book about Okinawa published in
1996 as 'Okinawa Dreams OK'.
(Note: the BBC World Service broadcasts of this series
are titled The Asian Family and include a feature about
Asian-Australian people living in Sydney which is also
titled Children of Heaven but is not included in this
Radio Eye series for Radio National).
