Julie Copeland
Julie
Copeland is one of ABC Radio's most well-known and respected
broadcasters with extensive experience in a range of high
quality radio programs.
During over 20 years with the ABC, Julie has produced and
presented radio programs which examine political, artistic
and cultural activities with both a national and international
focus.
Julie's strong interest in and knowledge of the arts and
culture was enhanced by ten years in Europe, where she worked
as a painter and designer and studied literature, art history
and cultural theory.
On returning to Australia in 1974, Julie worked at Melbourne's
talk radio station 3AW as Head of Research and Producer for
both the highly successful morning programs of the late Ormsby
Wilkins and Claudia Wright.
In 1978 she was one of a team of four on a daily TV current
affairs program on Channel Ten in Melbourne, called Shoulder
to Shoulder. During that year, she filmed 'scoop' interviews
in Libya with Colonel Gadhafi and Yasser Arafat.
Julie then began work for Radio National, producing and presenting
programs including Investigations, Broadband, Doubletake,
Saturday Arts Review, The Coming Out Show, Guest of Honour,
Sunday Feature, Encounter, and Arts Illustrated as well as contributing
to ABC Metropolitan and Regional Radio and ABC TV's Book program.
In 1981 Julie began ABC Radio's weekly book program, First
Edition which she continued to present until she launched
the first and only radio program to specialise in European
affairs, The Europeans, which she produced and presented with
great success until the end of 1990.
For the program, Julie travelled extensively and broadcast
material from many countries including Germany, Russia, Estonia,
Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Austria, France, Italy, Greece and
Spain.
In 1991 she was appointed as Commissioning Editor of a new
Radio National department, Arts Talk. In this position for
three years, she was responsible for setting up daily arts
programs as well as The Music Show; a weekly review of film
and Books and Writing.
In the last ten years she has presented Arts National and
the weekly arts feature, Arts Talk, followed by Sunday Morning
and her current program, Exhibit A.
As you'd imagine, Julie loves arguing about art and politics,
painting, reading, sitting drinking coffee in Italian piazzas,
smelling the roses, talking to the animals; and her particular
passion is horses.
