The murder of 7 Catholic monks by the leading Islamist resistance group in Algeria (GIA) in 1995 rocked the world. Having declared war on all foreigners, the GIA was unmoved by the pro-Islamic attitude of Father Abbot Christian and the friendly relations the monks cultivated with the town of Tibhirine.
