The fear of equine influenza reaching Victoria in the lead-up to the Melbourne Cup has escalated with a new outbreak about 200 kilometres from the border. While debate continues over how best to protect the state, Victoria's top vet has called for a national approach. Meanwhile, at the border town of Corowa a leading Melbourne Cup hopeful is trapped on the wrong side of the Murray River.
