Radiation results give health all-clear
Posted
The Western Australian Government says the results of a radiation survey prove there is no health risk from a decommissioned uranium testing site near Kalgoorlie.
Earlier this month, the Labor candidate for the seat of O'Connor, Ian Bishop, said the site, six kilometres north of Kalgoorlie, posed a health risk.
BHP Billiton used the site for testing ore from the Yeelirrie uranium deposit, near Wiluna, in the 1980s.
The area has since been decontaminated and rehabilitated with vegetation.
Mines Minister Norman Moore says radiation levels across the site were comparable with background radiation levels found elsewhere in the state.
"I asked the Department of Mines and Petroleum to undertake a complete assessment of the site and I'm pleased to say that the work they've done indicates the site has radiation levels which are probably less than some places in the Stirling Ranges, or probably the Darling Ranges in Perth," Mr Moore said.
