Police are investigating what is believed to be a highway shooting involving rival motorcycle gangs in Western Australia.

A man was shot while riding his motorcyle on the Great Eastern Highway at Wooroloo, about 55 kilometres east of Perth, around 3.00pm (WST).

He is in a serious but stable condition at Royal Perth Hospital and police have been stationed at his bedside.

Last week police were notified The Finks motorcycle gang was making a move into WA.

Police say they are investigating any links with outlaw motorcycle groups but have not confirmed if the victim's a bikie gang member.

Police are expected to release further details at a media conference tomorrow.

Highway traffic in both directions has been diverted along the Old Northam Road as police piece together how the man was shot.
