Boom Brisbane Broncos forward Sam Thaiday has capped a fine season by taking out the NRL club's player of the year award at its annual awards ceremony.

The 23-year-old Thaiday failed to make the 24-man Australian squad for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup, but the blow was softened a little by the recognition of his peers.

As well as winning the Paul Morgan Medal, Thaiday was also named players' player and best forward.

Wayne Bennett, who has joined St George Illawarra, gave an emotional farewell to the club which he coached for 21 years.

"As I walk out the door, I will tell you this once and for all: I know I was not right all the time," he said.

"But at the same time, I can honestly say I never made a decision for the wrong reasons.

"I always did what I believed was the right thing for the Broncos, right to the end of my days here.

"If it meant taking a shot for the club or the players, so be it. It was never about me, it was about you and your club.

"As the late Paul Newman said, it has been a privilege to be here."

Custodian Karmichael Hunt won best back, outgoing hooker Mick Ennis was named most consistent and prop nick Kenny most improved.

Winger Denan Kemp, who has signed with the New Zealand Warriors, was named rookie of the year and Andrew McCullough the Under-20s player of the year.

Cowboys hooker Aaron Payne reigned supreme in north Queensland, securing the Paul Bowman Medal as well as the players' player and clubman of the year awards.
