Warriors and Blues kick off domestic proceedings

Posted October 8, 2008 10:16:00

Western Australia and New South Wales begin the domestic cricket season with a one-day match at the WACA ground today.

The Blues are the defending four-day champions but finished last in the one-day competition last year.

The Warriors finished second-from-bottom but boast a number of big-hitting batsmen, including Shaun Marsh, Luke Ronchi and Adam Voges.

Blues captain Dominic Thornely says he is confident his side can contain the Warriors.

"We've picked a young side and we'll pick a young side all year," he said.

"The great thing about New South Wales cricket is we're continually producing Australian cricketers and in this group here you've got some really talented young players, so it'll be a great learning [curve] for them this year, but again we're going to be competitive this year.

"Our one-day form hasn't been great in the last two years, so we've got a real nothing-to-lose attitude this season and I'm certainly looking forward to leading the side."

After winning their first three one-day matches last season, the Warriors lost six in a row to fall out of contention for the final.

Warriors coach Tom Moody said his team is keen to make amends and has the depth to do so.

"We're looking relatively strong on paper," he said.

"What I'm looking forward to is us looking strong on the scoreboard, and that's people taking that responsibility and making sure they do the job for the side.

"It's a young group that is full of talent, the depth of the squad is also pretty exciting, so if we do have an injury, or if we do have players that are called up for international duties, I've got 100 per cent confidence in the depth of our squad."
