Uni to start mental health degree

Posted October 8, 2008 10:00:00

A new mental health degree will be introduced at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The community mental health degree will be open to school leavers, those returning to study and people with an interest in the field.

Professor John Lowe says the degree is the first of its kind and will provide graduates with many opportunities to step into the area of mental health.

"The emergence of this new professional in community mental health will provide a new service provider that is confident and has skills much broader than being trained now, to actually help the community to address these mental health issues," he said.

The community mental health degree will provide students with industry specific skills, with an emphasis on care planning, recovery and community capacity building.

"This three-year degree really is going to be aimed at 'upskilling' those who are working in health-related areas that may have gone through TAFE and for those that wish to get into the area of mental health," Professor Lowe said.
