The pros and cons of a carbon emissions trading scheme will be debated at a conference in Adelaide today.

The Great Energy Debate will have 30 speakers from industry, academia and politics.

The discussion will be on Professor Ross Garnaut's recommendation that Australia adopt an emissions trading scheme in 2010, with a 60 per cent cut by 2050.

Conference organiser Phil Sutherland says many in the business community do not fully understand the costs and implications of such a scheme.

"The Great Energy Debate has gathered together you know that veritable who's who of people across the full spectrum of the environmental sector, from government and industry and some of the most clever people in Australia will be speaking at the conference, they'll be putting forward ideas and views that I'm sure governments at all levels would want to capture," he said.
