Local builders show no interest in theatre revamp

Posted October 7, 2008 12:48:00

Lithgow City Council says it is disappointed no local builders have expressed an interest in renovating the Crystal Theatre in Portland.

The council has received submissions from six companies keen to undertake the refurbishment, which will include installing heating and upgrading amenities.

It is expected all six companies will be invited to tender for the proposed work.

The council's manager of regional services, Andrew Muir, says all the companies met the criteria for the project.

"Council, from its point of view, would have liked to have seen a bit more local interest," he said.

"However, there are certain specialities involved in such a project and the number and quality of the submissions that have been received is quite acceptable."

The proposed upgrade, which could cost about $300,000, is set to begin in the new year.

"It involves such things as instillation of the heating system, ventilation, internal refurbishment of toilets and the kitchen, just to make the facility more useable on a year round basis," Mr Muir said.
