Medical board suspends Darling Downs surgeon

Posted October 7, 2008 00:22:00

A Darling Downs surgeon has been suspended for six months after the Health Practitioners Tribunal found him guilty of unsatisfactory professional conduct.

Toowoomba's St Andrews Private Hospital lodged an official complaint against Darryl Wayne Bates three years ago.

The hospital accused Mr Bates of incompetence, lack of skill and poor judgment and patient care in the two years to 2005.

Today the Medical Board of Queensland was successful in taking action against Mr Bates.

The Health Practitioners Tribunal - chaired by District Court Judge Milton Griffin - suspended him for six months.

Mr Bates has also agreed to only work as an assistant surgeon on his return to work, meaning he will no longer be able to operate as the primary surgeon.

Mr Bates must also alert the medical board should he seek any new clinical appointment.
