Queensland Deputy Premier Paul Lucas says a $500,000 inlet cage is on its way to the Gold Coast for the final stages of the Tugun desalination plant.
Mr Lucas says the project is now more than 90 per cent complete, with the cage to be installed next week, depending on weather conditions.
The Government says the first desalinated water will be produced by November with full production expected by the middle of January.
Mr Lucas says the infrastructure that is being put in is specially designed for the project.
"This nine-tonne cage, 20 metres underwater, is designed to take water in to it slower than the tidal currents so the fish and marine life around it can swim around without any impact upon them at all," he said.
"It's important that we're not only producing water but that we're also looking after the environment."
