The lord mayors of capital cities have announced their support for an event that aims to connect homeless people with health, housing and welfare services.

Lord mayors put their support behind the project at their council's annual general meeting in Adelaide today.

The council will now roll out the event in various capital cities from November.

Brisbane has been hosting the event for the past two years and Lord Mayor Campbell Newman says it does make a difference.

"It at least is reaching out to homeless people, I think in a very positive way and showing we are a caring community, that homeless people should be getting a better level of support and attention and really actually proving people's sense of worth and self respect," he said.

Housing organisation Shelter SA, says it is hopeful the Homeless Connect event will come to Adelaide.

Gary Wilson says while the organisation has been holding a similar expo for the past five years, Homeless Connect would incorporate the entire city of Adelaide.

"We certainly reach a proportion of homeless people with our event, we don't want it to be super huge but if we can reach more people and provide them with more services and get the services better connected then everybody wins," he said.
