State and Federal Greens MPs have gathered in Adelaide, calling for greater urgency in securing water supplies for the Murray-Darling Basin.

South Australian Senator Sarah Hanson-Young was joined by her federal colleagues Greg Barber from Victoria and Lee Rhiannon from New South Wales.

Senator Hanson-Young says state leaders agreed in June to use their best endeavours to have bills ready on referring powers over the Murray-Darling to the Federal Government, but none has acted.

"They were given until November 1 to do this. At this stage not one state has passed the legislation in order to hand over their powers to the commonwealth, " she said.

"So at this stage the Water Minister's plan has failed, unless something happens urgently we will not even be able to start those discussions of securing water without the Federal Government coming in and pulling rank."
