National Engineering cuts jobs

Posted September 5, 2008 14:00:00

The economic downturn is beginning to bite, with a major employer in Young cutting 13 jobs.

The managing director of National Engineering, Norm Chapman, says it is regrettable.

He says financial market turmoil and high steel prices have slowed the building and steel fabrication industry, so some jobs have been made redundant.

The company employs aboutn 50 people still and the Mayor of Young, Gerry Bailey, says he is sure it will bounce back when conditions improve.

"I'm sure they haven't taken this step lightly. I guess the present financial climate and a downturn in the economy has forced this on them," he said.

"One can only feel very disturbed for those people who are now redundant and their families."

National Engineering says all entitlements have been paid to the affected workers.
