Rees confirmed as new NSW premier
Posted
Updated
Labor frontbencher Nathan Rees has been endorsed as the new premier of New South Wales following the dramatic resignation of Morris Iemma earlier today.
Mr Rees is currently the Minister for Water and Emergency Services and was widely tipped to put his hand up as a non-factional premier. His selection has emerged from a full Caucus meeting at State Parliament in Sydney.
"Morris Iemma resigned as Premier today and I nominated for the vacancy and I was elected with unanimous support of the full Labor Caucus," Mr Rees said.
He says he expects to be sworn in as premier this afternoon.
Mr Iemma resigned this morning, shortly after sacking his colourful treasurer, Michael Costa.
It is understood Mr Iemma gave a meeting of the Right faction an ultimatum and they refused to accept it. He walked out without saying a word.
Labor heavyweight John Della Bosca confirmed Mr Iemma's resignation.
It follows a tumultuous series of events that began with the Government's failure to privatise the state's electricity sector last month.
The Government's position was further weakened by the resignation of Deputy Premier John Watkins, who retired on Wednesday to spend more time with his family and take up a position with Alzheimer's Australia.
Former education minister Carmel Tebbutt was yesterday unanimously endorsed to take over as deputy by the Left faction during a meeting at State Parliament.
She will be formally endorsed this afternoon but it is not yet clear who else will make up the new-look Cabinet.
Some of Labor's Caucus appeared shell-shocked as they emerged from the partyroom meeting at State Parliament.
But Labor MP Linda Burney says the Caucus has rallied behind Mr Rees and Ms Tebbutt.
"We had two fine speeches from two fine men, we've got two new leaders and our job now is to get behind them, and that's absolutely what's happening," she said.
Fellow MP Michael Daley believes the changes offer the party new hope.
"The election in 2011, well you can say with the new leadership of Nathan Rees and Carmel Tebbutt that it's game on," he said.
Mr Daley says Mr Iemma was not tapped on the shoulder and that it was his decision to resign.
Tumultuous morning
News that Mr Iemma was gone came in the wake of a press conference by Mr Costa, who said he did not consider that he had been sacked until the decision was ratified by a Caucus meeting.
Earlier Mr Costa used his press conference to confirm that Mr Iemma had dumped him but suggested that he remained treasurer until the Caucus confirmed his sacking.
"I was advised by the Premier that he desired that I not be part of his ticket in the forthcoming reshuffle," Mr Costa said at his press call.
"I respect his right to do that."
Mr Costa is deeply unpopular with the public and with many of his own colleagues but he signalled that he was not prepared to go without a fight.
And typical of his style, he used his news conference to point the finger.
He accused his colleagues of lacking the "political courage" to make the hard decisions such as slashing big spending projects in rail and in health.
He also told the media that he was not prepared to stay on when the Iemma Government's approach risked New South Wales Triple-A credit rating.
"The job I'm interested in is the treasurer's job," he said.
"I'm interested in doing the mini-budget, but I am not prepared for political expediency to present a mini-budget that I know will threaten the triple-A credit rating.
"If you want me as treasurer you have to cop a mini-budget that will deliver a triple-A credit rating."
The Government faces an unwanted by-election in the state seat of Ryde, after one of its most competent performers, John Watkins, quit politics earlier this week, sparking manoevres around the necessary ministerial reshuffle.

He has no experience, no proven trackrecord.

I never liked the reactive approach of Morris Iemma. Especially his continual attacks on civil liberties.
Let's hope Nathan Rees takes a proactive stance with health, and welfare and realises also that NSW is not only Sydney.
I wish Nathan Rees well because the NSW Liberals are riddled with branch stacking religeous fanatics that would make Dan Brown shudder.Agree (0) Alert moderator

Well this is one way to renew. It will be interresting to see if it works.
The liberals could not do it at a federal level and the labour party has spilt a hell of a lot of blood to do it at the state level.
One would have always suspected that morris was going to be a temporary premier after bob car resigned - the thing that stuffed him up was that he won the election because the liberals were simply so pathetically inept.
so take a step back and have a look what has happened here.
trying to privatise a publically owned asset - bad idea
it was a bad idea for nick griener and Kerry whatsername lost with here fatal attempt at a bribe in another election, you'd have thought the labour party would have got the message.

Petty, petty politics. These people are supposed to be running the state. If you behaved like this in private enterprise you would be sacked on the spot or your company would go broke. And that is exactly what is happening to NSW. No matter who is in charge for Labor the result will be the same. And the Libs don't look much better either. Well let's see now, Nathan Rees has presided over & has knowingly ignored the truly dreadful state of NSW's appallingly abused & over-regulated fragile river systems & over pumped groundwater resources, so one can only assume he will drain this clearly delapidated state down even further into a quite unsalvagable & unsustainable decline! The damaged Gwydir River in North West NSW has been knowingly used as a mere badly abused irrigation channel for the delivery of regulated water, under Mr Reese's direct ministerial hand. It is a national disgrace, yet as the Minster in charge of State Water & the Minister for Energy & Water, Nathan Rees, he has continually allowed the Gwydir River to be regulated, wrecked & ruined!

And, as the first (and only) act as premier of this term of parliament, he should immediately go to the governor, and request a full dissolution of the parliament, and call an election for every seat in the parliament, possibly with a simple referendum question; "should the electricity system be privatised?".

I think this is only a fill in role. Nathan Rees has only been in parliament since the last election ( March 07 ). The right wing of the ALP ( who control the ALP ) at the moment, does not have anyone that's either popular with the electorate ( Tripodi, Meagher etc) or capable of leading the state. Nathan Rees is a member of the left faction which includes Carmel Tebbutt & John Wwatkins ( although he's now gone too ). However that does not mean he couldn't switch over to the right. I think the right faction will be looking for someone they could groom for the premiers role. So best of luck Nathan and don't turn your back for too long.

I cannot forgive those responsible for gifting more than $100 million to the Catholic Church's party at the same time as NSW was running out of credit. How bigotted and biased can a politician be?
I cannot forgive two strutting turkeys who grew so proud that they forgot that it is the party who supports them and provides them their jobs. If they were Independents, Costa and Llama would perchance have the right to go against public opinion, their election promises, and to be as stupid as they wish. But they are not - they signed up to a party and must now answer for their lack of discipline.
These two should, must and will leave the parliament because they have demonstarted that they are unfitted for duty. Their arrogance and emotional blustering have no place in the highest decision making forum in the State of NSW.
Unfortunately, it is now virtually certain that NSW will limp onwards to 2011, then change government.

If the government can keep its act together it will up be up to the Libs to also keep its act together, and then try to convince the voters that they are the better choice.
