Reef Cove developers surprised by federal moratorium

Posted September 5, 2008 13:23:00

The company in charge of a controversial tourism development in far north Queensland says it is surprised by the Federal Government's moratorium on the project.

Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett has announced a 12-month ban on construction of the Reef Cove Resort near Cairns because of concerns about sediment run-off into the Great Barrier Reef.

A spokeswoman for Reef Cove Resort says the company is unaware of any outstanding requirements and it is seeking legal advice.

Mr Garrett says he has the power to extend the moratorium if the company does not cooperate.

"We take our responsibilities to protect the environment of far north Queensland very seriously," he said.

"We'll continue to work closely with the Cairns Regional Council to look at the immediate concerns that have been addressed at the site.

"We want to make sure that the site is stable before that wet season that's coming."
