Pitt defends road surface after Bruce Hwy crash

Posted September 5, 2008 12:05:00

The Main Roads Minister says his department will investigate a fatal crash south of Gympie, in south-east Queensland, but insists the road surface is safe.

Three adults and an unborn baby died when a car and three trucks crashed on the Bruce Highway near Kybong yesterday afternoon.

The State Government says it is the 17th reported accident in that area over the past decade.

But Warren Pitt says the stone mastic asphalt surface is not to blame.

"We do not believe that it's a contributing factor here ... we don't believe the road itself was a contributing factor," he said.

"Early indications are that it was a combination of very adverse weather conditions and an overtaking opportunity that went wrong.

"But of course the police are going to investigate this fully ... and Main Roads will carry out a full investigation of our own.

"We will concentrate of course on design, road surface and things of that nature."
