Tourism group wants quick start to ring road work

Posted September 5, 2008 11:50:00

A tourism body says construction of the Bunbury outer ring road needs to begin as soon as possible.

This week the Western Australian Government announced the Perth to Bunbury Highway is ahead of schedule and that the road may be opened as early as April next year.

While the Margaret River Geographe Tourism Task Force welcomes the announcement, it says construction of the bypass road at Bunbury needs to start.

The chairman of the group, Clif Edwards, says to speed up the route at one end would prove pointless if traffic is only going to be slowed further down the road.

"If we're taking half-an-hour off the trip now going around Mandurah, it seems to be pretty crazy to lose half of that time getting through Bunbury," he said.

"Looking at the other projects they're talking about, to save 15 minutes through Bunbury and also to save the congestion for the local people I think would make it a priority."
