AFL boss Andrew Demetriou has played down growing concerns about the 2010 draft, in which the new Gold Coast team will be given nine of the first 15 picks.

Mr Demetriou says established clubs are comfortable with concessions for the Gold Coast Football Club, which will receive the first three picks in that year's draft.

The Gold Coast will also have priority picks in the rookie draft and will be able to sign up to 16 uncontracted players after 2010.

Mr Demetriou has told Fairfax Radio he doubts clubs are worried about their players being poached.

"One thing we have introduced in this process which was a suggestion that came out of the clubs, was that if a club loses an uncontracted player, then this time they will be compensated with 'fair value' in so far as the draft. And that hasn't happened previously," he said.

The 18th team, potentially from West Sydney, is expected to benefit from similar draft concessions.

GCFC is aiming to enter the competition in 2011 and officially launched its branding last night.

The club's development coach Guy McKenna says the team will wear red, gold and blue and the mascot will be a lifesaver.

"I'm really impressed with what they've come up with and more importantly what the community's come up with," he said.

"The community's asked for it - they've got it they're going to embrace the club. I'm certainly going to drive that side of things from the club."

The Gold Coast City Council will contribute $10 million towards a new AFL stadium in the city.

The AFL's Gill McLachlan says the location of the stadium has not yet been decided.

"What we need to make sure is that what we've got is a 25,000-seat stadium... redeveloped with first class facilities that's of AFL standard with the right amount of transport infrastructure to get people in and out," McLachlan said.

"If it ticks all of those boxes...whether it's Karawa or Nerang or wherever it is we don't mind."

    Yay ! They're gonna need it !
Fans love winners and to start a team properly they need to win, ala the Lions. I just hope they don't blow all the choices on players that are in their 'autumn' years !

Well well. Here's another swipe by corporate cowboy Demetriou at our once great game of Australian Rules. Excessive money is ruining the game. How appropriate to have a lifesaver as a mascot. Sweet, lightweight, has a hole in the middle and one gets best results when there is a lot of sucking involved. Hmmmm! How appropriate. The AFL has extended a lifeline to this club alright!

        Cap'n swing,

I think they're referring to a lifeguard, not lifesaver. though, knowing qld it might be a fruit tingle. i wish them well either way...

16k tickets sold to swans/roos game,
The second team in Sydney wouldn't work nor will a Gold Coast team,
Gold Coast is full of backpackers and tourists,
Brisbane Lions and Syndey Swans have one of the lowest memberships in any AFL teams why not boost these teams credentials and get them upto par with the rest,
Also Melbourne/Richmond i think should merge

Richmond is one of the 4 top clubs (Ess/Coll/Carl/Rich) when it comes to club membership.. why would you think we should merge when we are one of the main clubs still in the black when it comes to finances and why take on Melbourne's debt?
        Get real
.. and anyway I cant see any player at Melbourne the Tigers would want..

I can think of a couple - they would kill for a decent crumbing small forward like Wonaemerri or Aaron Davey. Brown will never fully recover from that horror leg injury and is past his glory days while Tambling is the most over-rated Top 3 draft pick in AFL history. Cotchin is going to be the best thing that's happened to Richmond for years - but they need more firepower up forward - Richo's only good for two more years at best. They should have taken Buddy in that draft when they had the chance! :-)

Get real... Richmond is one of the 4 top earning clubs with around 40k screaming fans - why would they take on Melbourne's debt and usless playing list?

I wish them luck, they are going to need it but with the added player list they should have a dream run like the Eagles and Lions had.. but havent they both come back to the field now they are on equal footing with the other 14 clubs..
    - and A lifeguard mascot? .. putting the kiss of life into AFL in Qld I quess :)

What are you talking about! Equal footing? Don't carry on about equal footing in the AFL. Collingwood- only travel about 3 times a season.

Red, gold and blue eh... sounds remarkably similar to the old Fitzroy jumper, and the current Brisbane Lions jumper!

where is the tassie team? the whole state plays aussie rules. Is it being ignored because it would not be stealing ground from league? If Melbourne moved there they could just change their name to the Diemens.

I can't see a gold coast team flourishing at all.

Well, Melbourne the City was settled from Launceston in Tasmania origionally and Launceston is where AFL is played in Tasmania so there is a few links there already - sounds like it could be a good arguement to put forward

Agree Rocky. With the player contribuition Tassie has made to the VFL/AFLover the years there is obviously plenty of talent. I think the argument of limited corporate sponsorship plus the current 'Tassie Hawks' deal works against them. As NT Boy says below - they should have a good argument - much more than GC17 or another Sydney team.

footy supporter since 1964 here-i remember when footy was a game, not a business.
no idea why we need any more teams. 20 million people, 16 professional teams just in this code alone.
16 is a nice number-leave it at that.

They are doomed to failure if they are only aiming at a 25,000 seat stadium. We're not talking about rugby league here.
