Arts council to hit the airwaves

Posted September 5, 2008 09:23:00

The Young District Arts Council is set to broadcast on community radio from the start of next year.

Young Shire Council last week asked the group to withdraw its radio licence bid in support of the current station 2YYY.

The arts council challenged the move, saying broadcasting authorities had given it permission to broadcast for six months from the start of next year.

Its president, Sally Hoffman, says the Young Shire Council granted the group access to a radio tower at a special meeting last night.

"Well I just hope that this matter is behind us and that people appreciate that there is now a community radio licence for Young and that there will be continuous broadcasting for the whole of that 12 month period and that to me is good news for everybody," she said.

"It seemed nonsensical to me that there was ever an issue about this.

"Young District Arts Council is only to make sure that Young has a community broadcasting radio licence and that's what we've done.

"It seems strange to me that there should have been any objection whatsoever."
